The Family Room: Before

Our family room is nearing completion! It has been a long six months. In one day, it went from looking like the pictures above, to looking like the three pictures below. But then from there, it was slow going. It took me seven long hours to get that wallpaper off the wall. That is about the only monumental thing I have done down there.

We decided to make our one big room into two. The room was awkwardly big, so adding another room to our house seemed like the right decision.

Ryan was so happy to see the fireplace go. For some reason he hated it so badly. What he didn't plan on was the enormous mess it was going to make. He about lost it after he was done, but luckily, I came to the rescue and helped him get it all cleaned up in a timely manner.

Now came the problem of the mudding and taping, which was one of the things Ryan didn't think he could do on his own. Luckily, Ryan's co-worker ran into the bumper of our brand new car and said he would trade his mudding services as restitution. How convenient.

After all this, one of the final things holding us up was the fireplace, but we finally got it done on Saturday and it is all we hoped for and more.

I'm am happy/relieved to say that all we have left to do it paint, have the carpet installed, hook up the speakers, and put our furniture in! It is my goal to have this done by August 20th. Many of you won't believe that we will ever finish, but I submit to you that it will happen in the next two weeks!!

Dollar Tree has failed me...

I got a mop at the dollar store to use yesterday on my kitchen floor. I got it wet and went back and forth 5 times before it completely fell apart in my hands. The sponge tore off and the mop was useless. This really bothered me. When I related this story to my co-workers today, they laughed, saying, "You get what you pay for!", but this is not the truth here. I've bought tons of stuff from the dollar store--most everything has lasted longer than 10 seconds. I do not feel like I got my dollar's worth with this mop. Will this incident shake my faith in $1 items?

While Ryan was away a couple weekends ago, I decided to pick up dinner at Cafe Paesan. After I got my food, I walked out to a white Lumina, pressed the unlock button, and opened the door. I went to get in, but realized something was weird. The inside of my car was completely filthy!! (Some of you may be thinking that this wouldn't be too weird, but I've turned over a new leaf.) I stared at it for at least 30 seconds before something clicked in my head, telling me that THIS WAS NOT MY CAR!! I'm almost 100% sure that no one saw me running off...

I painted the bathroom while Ryan was gone for the weekend and I lived to tell the tale!

This would be a better story if I had remembered to take a before picture. For those of you who never saw it, imagine a Harley themed bathroom with lots of black and orange. Even Ryan can't deny that this is a huge improvement!

Monster Truck Rally World Finals

After missing out last year, we decided that we couldn't miss the Monster Jam again this year.

Nan and Jared attended for their first time!

I didn't get a picture of the giant fire breathing dragon that picked up a Lumina and tore it to shreds. Luminas are pretty much the go to car for destruction at Monster Truck Rallys. Why???

family zoo trip!

the harris family decided to take a family vacation last weekend. the last trip we all went on was the big fish lake trip of '99, so this was a pretty big deal. we decided to go easy and attend the hogle zoo. ryan was "unable" to attend, as were nan and jared, so the rest of us loaded up and took the short trip there. apparently i supplied everyone with incorrect directions, so people were pretty ornery right off the bat, but we all got over it as soon as we arrived and realized that ron had paid for everyone. way to go, dad! the trip was almost spoiled when landon tripped and bloodied his knee and i found out that the hippo was dead, but we got over it. other than that, the trip was pretty quite nice. the highlight of the trip was probably seeing the new baby elephant and making new special family memories. thank you harris family!

Disneyland!

The Furr family loves Disneyland. I think they love it more than life itself.

I was privileged enough to accompany them on a 5-day trip to the blessed place.

I rode rides I'd never ridden before.

I saw corners of the park I never knew existed.

I walked longer/further than I've ever desired to.

A couple major highlights of the trip:

The $8 turkey leg I devoured one afternoon.

The boy we saw pooping his pants after riding Splash Mountain.

The death march back to the hotel on Friday night.

The never ending obsession with $3.50 churros.

I admit that I thought 5 days in the park would push me over the edge, but I was so wrong.

White Trash Tradition

Ryan and I went to the Monster Truck Rally World Finals in Las Vegas for the second year in a row. For those of you who have never attended a Rally, the monster trucks race around and fans, like Ryan, clap, cheer, and yell for more. Sometimes these trucks crash and start on fire; other times they actually land in the stands. Most fans, like Ryan, love Grave Digger. They have long hair, long beards, and wear Monster Truck Rally apparel.

Ryan put his shoes on in our living room without untying the laces. As you can imagine, there was a lot of stomping and grinding. He soon realized that he had stepped in a large pile of dog poo the last time he was wearing those shoes. It wasn’t pretty.

When Ryan gets home from work he is generally a mess--last night was no exception. His camouflage pants had dirt and particles all over the front and back of them and his knees had humongous mud stains. His shirt was covered in sawdust and little pieces of wood and dirt, and it was quite obvious that he was wearing at least four layers of shirts underneath. His hair was frizzy and going everywhere--add that to the beard, and he’s reminiscent of Jeremiah Johnson.

Regardless, we decided to go to Kinkos right when he got home from work last night. While we were there, Ryan got bored and started wandering around the store, looking at the different machines. He was standing by a fairly complicated looking one when three guys approached him and asked, “Can you help us?” Ryan just kind of stood there confused and one of the guys finally said, “Oh, do you not work here?” We were both basically shocked into a stupor. We couldn’t believe that had just happened. We’ll give the guys a break though because Ryan’s dirty blue shirt was the same color as the Kinkos employees.

This morning I awoke from a dream into a nightmare. It was 4:20AM and the alarm was going off. No, this was not a horrible mistake or a cruel joke--Ryan had to leave for work by 5:10.

I wouldn't count on seeing us after 8:30PM for the next few months.

Quirks

Tara tagged me here, so I’ve decided to document a few of my peculiarities.

I wear my socks inside out. I find that the thick seam near the toe of a sock rubs between the inside of my shoe and my pinky toe. Wearing a sock the wrong way out solves this problem. Throughout the years, I’ve attempted wearing them the right way, but after having the nice, soft outside surface of the sock against my foot for so many years, I can’t bring myself to torture my feet with that uninviting, rough, itchy side.

I have issues with fleece. I only allow myself to wear it in certain situations. I cannot wear if it has gotten wet or if any part of my body is wet, such as my hair. If any kind of steam will be near me or if my lips are chapped, I am sickened if the fleece is touching my face. This is especially an issue if the fleece item has been washed several times, leaving the little fleece balls behind.

Everybody! I was shocked to hear this morning that my very own Backstreet Boys will be the one’s to sing the National Anthem for the first game of the World Series this evening. I didn’t see this coming, but honestly, who did? Everyone who knows me knows I’ve always been the perfect fan, so I, of course, will be glued to the television set tonight. I just wish the Backstreet Boys would quit playing games with my heart though because if this performance is all they have left to give, I will be incomplete.

Eventually I like to introduce everyone I know to a favorite movie of mine—It. It is a Stephen King thriller about a clown that terrorizes and kills children. I like to watch it occasionally, and this last weekend I decided it was finally time for Ryan to experience It. He was skeptical and uninterested at first, but then he really got into it. He even had a nightmare about Pennywise the Clown the other night, but after seeing this picture, who wouldn't?

So, if any of you are looking for a good movie to watch this Halloween, choose It. You won’t regret it.

So the spiders are gone, but last Saturday, I had other problems. It rained all day and we all know that rain brings worms. Somehow during the night, two worms were able to get underneath the door and were waiting for us on the rug when we woke up. It was the strangest thing. What will happen next?

The Ford was involved in a fender bender this weekend. While in the care of a Tunex employee, it jumped a curb and crashed into another car. The Ford came out of the incident unscathed, but the other car wasn’t so lucky. The poor girl came out of her hair appointment to find herself in a very unfortunate situation. Let this be a lesson to us all (as I imagine Tawny would want it to be) to not go to appointments while you should be watching General Conference.

I was seriously injured last night. While washing the dishes, a shard of glass lacerated my skin. I called Becky over to administer first aid. I now have a large bandage on my hand and I am unable to perform hard labor.

RIP Chevy Lumina

Ryan and the Lumina were involved in a head-on collision with a deer near Wolf Creek Pass early yesterday morning. Ryan did not see the deer until it's head was smashing into the windshield infront of him. "I don't know how it happened" he exclaimed, "I only looked down for a second." The Lumina was only traveling around 35 mph at the time of the incident, therefore sparing it from extensive damage. The deer was nowhere to be found, so it is assumed that the deer, unharmed, ran off, though it did leave behind several patches of hair in a broken headlight.

Arrangements are now being made to get the Lumina repaired.

Help!

There are spiders living right outside the door to our house. I'm not talking about little spiders-I'm talking humongous, fat-bodied, long-legged, nasty things. Imagine the movie Arachnophobia and you might understand. One jumped at Ryan's face the other night, but luckily he was able to dodge it and kill it with his work boot. We wouldn't dare try to smash it with anything else-these things can't be killed with a flipflop or a flimsy tennis shoe. The good news is that we have yet to find one of these spiders that has penetrated the walls of our house. The bad news is that yesterday morning I woke up with a bug bite on my wrist. It could possibly be a spider bite. You never know.
